Week 7: 3D Design

PRACTICAL – Design Communication
Choose one design from last week’s 2 sketched designs (sports & fashion)
  1. 1.  Make a list of 2 key concepts you are trying to communicate
    Childlike
    Bright = Safer
    Mushroom

  2. 2.  Make a list of 2 key feelings your trying to communicate
    Fun
    Safety

  3. 3.  REFINE your design concept to communicate these 4 things

Week 7: 2D Design

PRACTICAL – Design Communication
Make a list of 2 key concepts you are trying to communicate
Art/Design/Creativity is passionate.
We live in a location that is hot.

Make a list of 2 key feelings your trying to communicate
Heated passion
Calmness

This is my design:
I would develop this further, creating my own brush for the leaves to make them more a more common one to the Northern Territory, also the text in bold would possibly be more legible, but i may have to change the colour.

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Investigation

Using a scale of 1 – 10,
each group assigns a quantitative rating for all the designs, based on the three criteria below

  1. 1.  Clear rendition of 2 key concepts
  2. 2.  Clear rendition of 2 key feelings
  3. 3.  Immediate visual appeal

Week 4: 3D Design

Group Task

Each group member had to choose the best of their designs from last week, unfortunately there were only 4 people in the class and so we ended up with 2 designs. As a group we had to discuss the Different options that could have been used in the design process (exploration) and the possible problems with the design (challenges).

The first design was Keiran's pegasus pony:

The different options that could have been used with this design were getting the colours balanced correctly.
The possible problems with the design could be said to be finding originality, in both the focus of the design and the brushes used in the background.

The second design was Cherill's pop art fish:

The different option that could have been used were further colour exploration and different brush patterns.
The possible problems are that it could be said to be too blue, causing difficulty seeing the fish. Also it has no focus point so as a wall hanging piece of art, but would make an ideal background image with the un-intrusive design.

Practical
We had to choose our favourite design concept from our current works and further research and think on the possibilities of how we might differ in creating our design and what could make it better.

Two experiments

Pros and cons

Choosing and refusing
- What ways could it be created, why we decide to create it one way over another.

Week 5: 2D Design

This week we had an exercise on assumption-challenging. This means seeing the assumptions on how certain aspects of a design or situation is and then challenging that to see if there is another way that it could be better. It is an exercise in constructive self-criticism, to help the person see flaws in something where they would not when they already have a preconceived opinion. This is very relevant in the process of design as it will help the designer see what others will see when shown the end result. Not only is it helpful with fixing issues before they become an issue, but also a good exercise to prepare a person to being able to accept the criticisms they may have put upon them or their work.

Challenging Assumptions

The first Challenging assumptions exercise was a quiz. The following are the questions and solutions:

Q1. Relatives - A doctor in London had a brother in Manchester, who was a lawyer - butthe lawyer in Manchester did not have a brother in London who was a doctor. Why?
A1:  The doctor was his sister.

Q2: Bottled Money - If you put a small coin piece in an empty bottle and replaced thecork, how would you get the coin out of the bottle without taking out the cork or breakingthe bottle?
A2: By pushing the cork in.

Q3: The Restaurant Meal - Three women each have two daughters, and they all go into arestaurant for a meal. There are only seven vacant seats in the restaurant, but each hasa seat for herself. How do they manage it?
A3: The people were as follows. A grandmother, who was the mother of 2 daughters, her 2 daughters also had 2 daughters of their own.

The second was Mike's Audition.

Mike had been told of a movie role audition at a last moments notice. He had very limited time to get some distance to get to the audition and had to account for traffic, sleep and personal hygiene. He had focussed first on how long it would take to drive to the audition and from that determined how much time he would have left for sleep and personal hygiene. It was one in the morning, his calculations were that he would have to share his time left in this way:

Getting up at three am, providing only 2 hours sleep
Time to shower and get ready
4 Hours of morning traffic

These were my assumptions:

The movie audition is at a certain time and cant be changed.
 - Perhaps he could get it rescheduled.
Mike lives a fair distance from the place the audition is being held.
 - Are there more direct routs?
Mike wont be getting much sleep.
- How could he gain more sleep? If he wasn't driving himself he could sleep on the way.
There is a safer and faster way to get to the audition than Mike driving to it.
- Public transports are available, could he use one such as the subway instead of the bus.

Assumable solutions:

If they have a train service Mike could usethat as generally that is a faster form of transport as it goes in more directlines and all traffic has to give way, unless it was a subway then again itwould likely be faster but traffic wouldn’t have to give way.

Mike could take the rout he knows, atleastthen he would know a more set time of when he would get there and be able tomanage his time wisely.

Mike could risk taking what he thinks is abetter rout and risk getting lost, completely missing the audition.

The correct solution was that Mike could leave at that time, drive across town and then sleep in his car and use a service station shower or take some water and washing things to clean himself once he got there.

The last task for the challenging assumptions exercise was taking some of our own working and applying the technique to it. Coming up with 2 assumptions and challenging them.

My website background.

Assumption: The colours are as they need to be andproportions are acceptable.

Challenge: The colours could be better done. Theleaves and vine roots could be a better colour, they would be better to be adarker green but lighter than the vine itself. The vine roots would also bebetter as thinner and more of them to make the vine roots look not only niceand less eye-catching, but having them smaller and more of them would enhancethe picture. The leaves could be removed completely, as there are vines thatthrive without leaves. The background of blue could be altered to look like itis the sun and blend in to the overall picture.

Assumption: Its finished.

Challenge: The picture is clearly not finished. Thevines do not have roots for the entire length, the blending on the wood is notdone properly as the grain lines are needed to be more prominent on the branchso it looks like it verges into not being able to be seen. One of the smallerbranches coming off the main one is out of place and the grain colour iscompletely wrong. The vines are too constrictive on the main branch and toostraight in the diagonal lines, most likely they would hang mor directly downthan go in the diagonal lines in such a uniform way.

Reflections:
This week i learnt that i need to criticise  my own work before submitting it as a finished product and ensuring there is no way i could make it better. By doing this i will produce better work, pick up on mistakes and correct previous mistakes during the creation process. This will allow me to produce not only better designs but also by learning from my mistakes and being aware of the mistakes i make i can most likely reduce the time it takes me to create designs.
The Assumption-Challenge exercise taught me to that sometimes the best solution is the utmost simplest, i will now remind myself not to dismiss something just because it is the obvious answer (and therefore can't be the answer I'm seeking because "shouldn't it be more difficult or complex?"). Also this exercise was a good reminder to not undervalue the process of reduction in problem solving, i feel that a regular use of problem solving methods would indeed help any designer keep a sharp and open mind to all possibilities, small or large.

Week 3: 3D Design

Group exercise

We had to design a form of personal transport that is eco-friendly in our groups, giving the design a catchy name.

Practical

The practical followed on from the group project. We each had to design 3 rough ideas of the eco-frienldy transport and describe its function, materials and style.

Reflections
I had great difficulty thinking of the ideas for the eco friendly transport and could think of none in the allotted 30 minutes. I ended up doing it solely as homework.

Week 3: 2D Design

Group exercise

As a group we had to decide on a combination of words and design something that incorporated all of the words. Each person in the group had to create two 2D designs based on the word combination.

My groups combination was Dog/Camping

The difficulty with this task was not thinking in literal terms. I had a lot of trouble thinking of ideas that were not realistic or word art.

First i did the word camping with the shape of a dog.

Next i did a camping scene with a boy wearing a hat//beanie on his head with the dog ears on the hat as covers to keep the ears warm.

Lastly i did a mother dog with her puppies camping in a cave together.

Practical

We had to design three 2D ideas for our exhibition portfolio. I had a lot of difficulty creating these ideas in only a 2D format. I kept straying to a 2D and 3D combination. Another issue i had was i had no idea of what the "style" of the design was called, i knew a general idea of how i wanted the design to look but was unsure how to name the style i would use, in the end i used google to search for lists of art styles and then used google images to see what the art styles looked like when applied in art.

Here is a list of my 2D design concepts.

2 variations

ocean shoreline landscape –

shape: rectangle
media: paint/canvas
style: realism

shape: square
media: crochet/wool/cotton
style: abstract

dragon –

shape: dragon shape
media: photoshop
style: western influence dragon, still life

shape: square/rectangle
media: oil paint/canvas
style: eastern influence dragon, surrealism

Initially, i had the concept of one dragon made of clay with a painted glaze.

picture book illustration -

shape: circular
media: pencil
style: black and white sketch

shape: rectangle/square
media: watercolours
style: contemporary

This idea i was thinking of separate pages in a book.

Reflections

I have really been enjoying the class this week, it has been a long time since i have had to come up with artistic ideas in a relatively short space of time. It has been difficult re-learning thinking on my feet and i am sure i am not quite there properly yet, but well on my way. I just have to learn to dream again and let myself go where reality doesn't exist like i once did as a teenager.

Week 1: 3D Design

3D Design

This 3D design is myfavourite of the ones i viewed. I love how the shades of grey make the othercolours stand out so much more. I admire the work and time that would have goneinto this piece along with the beauty.

This youtube video is about a program that automatically converts 2D photos into 3D images. While it isn't interactive 3D, the fact that a computer program did it, removing the time and effort it would have taken a person to is exciting! This is obviously a very early stage design, because as we know technological advances are constant so it is safe to assume that this program will evolve into better versions in future. A comment that was written the page fascinated me, talking about how this would aid robotic visual and movement programming.

Reflection

While i enjoyed the search for 3D designs, i was unsure if the 3D design was supposed to be a graphic that looked 3D or somethings that was a 3D object. This week i realised to ensure i get clarity on what is expected when being asked for specific things, incase my assumptions are incorrect.

Week 2: 3D design.

3D Chalk drawn Mario

Video with time-lapse showing the creation of the 3D art, and people enjoying the fun at the end.

I couldn't decide between these 3 and i dread how many i would have if i looked at more. The art is amazing, people can not just view it but also act out parts on its surface and look as if they are there, really doing the action. The painted one would have draw backs of ensuring you don't 'colour outside of the lines', while the chalk one would have the drawback of smudging easily and ruining the work (also the chalk one would be non permanent most likely).

Shape: Rectangle, with strap.

Media: Photoshop

Style: Bright and bold

Reflections

My biggest issue for this week in both 2D and 3D design was that i had trouble getting past my mindset that everything around us is a source of information for design. 3D design is much more open to interpretation because it can be a graphic, image or solid/tangible object.
